Ireland National Final: Live Report - Will the Feathers fly tonight?
February 23, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Welcome to Limerick for the 2008 Irish national final. Tonight six songs will compete to be the Irish representative at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland will hold the most controversial, criticised and discussed National Final due to a participant which Eurovision has never seen before. Will tonight be battle of the sexes or species…

The show begins with a look back at Irelands Eurovision past, which includes a record amount of 7 victories. Guest judges include last years winner Marija Serifovic, Dana (1970) and Louis Walsh, a record producer.

Song order:
1. Double Cross My Heart - Donal Skehan
2. Irelande Douze Points - Dustin The Turkey
3. Time to Rise - Maya
4. Not Crazy After All - Leona
5. Sometimes - Liam Geddes
6. Chances - Marc Roberts

Donal Skehan begins the show. Vocally, the song is not strong however it is quite catchy. The song is very similar to the ‘Swedish schlager’ style, which is quite popular in Eurovision, which can be explained by its Swedish composers. However, the performance is probably not strong enough to go to Belgrade, however is a slight chance.

Second, we have the most talked about contestant this year, Dustin the Turkey. He enters… flies… well Dustin is now on the stage. Dustin, acompanied by female dancers and gives an ok performance. Marija comments “sometimes it is good to be different”, but perhaps was being sympathetic as the crowd boos the song and honestly I don’t know what to make of this performance. Many believe it will represent Ireland - I guess we will have to see! Goble!

The third song is from Maya. She is quite over-the-top, however she has a big voice which is quite impressive and likeable. She is dressed in white (a major trend in 2006 it seemed) and she is joined on stage by some beautiful ballet dancers.

Leona is next. She sings really well and is very well presented. Leona is quite likeable and gives a great performance! She is the best so far and is definately a chance to perform in Belgrade.

Now, Liam Geddes graces the stage. Liam sings very well and is accompanied on stage with singers and a few instrument players, including a pianist. A possible chance for Belgrade, however has some popular competition and may be forgotten in the voting.

The final song is from second time performer, Marc Roberts. He sings quite well with a group backing, which was very well recevied by the jugdes and audience. Marc is the final performance for the night.
So… Let the voting begin! Will the feathers fly tonight?

Voting has begun.

The judges have given their comments and still Dustin is receving alot of attention. Dana still can not believe that Dustin is competing, however Dana believes that Dustin will prevail which is also the same prediction from Marija and Louis. However, Louis supports Donal’s song and thinks it’s the best song for Eurovision.

More information to come.
