 As previously reported from esctime, without confirmation, Moscow will host the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. After Dima’s victory this year, he proclaimed Moscow would host and today it was confirmed by Prime Minister Putin.
At the Russian cabinet today, Putin said “We will hold the Eurovision song contest in Moscow”. The deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov said the strongest rival bid had come from St. Petersburg.

Moscow (Moskva) is Russia’s capital and also is the largest city in Russia and also in Europe. Moscow is Russia’s center of political, economic, religious, financial, educational and transportations. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. Moscow has a population of just under 10.3 million and an area of 1,081 km².
Moscow is home to many beautiful monuments including Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Statue of Peter the Great, Triumphal Arch, Bogdan Khmelnitsky Bridge, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, “Fraternity of Peoples” fountain, Bolshoi Theatre, Patriarshiye Ponds, Novodevichy Convent & Golden Fountain.
Possible places to host: Olympic Stadium (Max 80,000 - normally used to hold 10,000 to 16,000 people), Khodynka Arena (capacity 14,500) or Luzhniki Palace of Sports (capacity 13,700). It is most likey that the Olympic Stadium will be used due to its size, experience and location. The arena was built in 1980 to host the Summer Olympics and has since hosted the 1999 FIBA EuroStars game and the 2005 Euroleague Final Four.
Most recently, Moscow successfully hosted the 2008 Champions League final and accommodated crowds of thousands.
